In the Summer of 2018, Fashions Unlimited piloted Baltimore’s Premier Sewing School, teaching fashion entrepreneurs how to construct a product from start to finish. Participants received a tour of the factory, saw demonstrations of the different cutting and sewing operations, learned skills of machine set-up, patterning, and sewing, and ultimately tried their hand at these techniques to make a tote bag. The intention was to help the students move beyond home sewing to understand product development and the manufacturing process in a fashion factory setting.
Fashions Unlimited also incubated the factory learning experience with the Intro to Fashion Product Development training course. Participants experienced the factory firsthand and learned about the stages of the product development cycle. This course provided an overview of terms and techniques to know in order to build a successful fashion business. The purpose of the program was to create a bridge between fashion industry knowledge traditionally taught in school and trade insights that happen on the production factory floor.
We’re hoping to continue our educational programs to help foster a garment industry in Baltimore alongside the city’s talented entrepreneurs. Let us know if you’d like to be a part of this experience!
